According to the most recent information, scientists at Oregon Health and Science University have created the first-ever drug to treat the excruciating joint pain that results from infection with the recently discovered Chikungunya virus.
A virus called the Chikungunya virus is spread by mosquitoes.

It should be emphasized that no vaccine against the Chikungunya virus has yet received approval. According to reports, as a result of the new study, the substance may go through its first human testing by the end of 2027.

Warmer temperatures are home to the mosquito species that carry their bites might spread the infection. The chikungunya virus originated in Africa and has since migrated to Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Americas, and Europe. Climate change may result in an expansion of its geographic distribution.

Symptoms of Chikungunya:-

For one to two weeks after the first infection, Chikungunya can produce fever, joint and muscular discomfort, a rash, and other symptoms. The likelihood of developing a serious illness or passing away is higher among young children, older people, and those with high blood pressure or diabetes.

30 to 40% of patients will experience persistent Chikungunya arthritis, or continuous joint pain, for months or even years, despite the fact that the majority of patients ultimately recover. The pain it causes prevents some individuals from working.

Chikungunya medication:-

Lowering the total viral load or virus burden is the aim of the experimental Chikungunya antiviral medication. The chemical is referred to as a 2-pyrimidone small molecule inhibitor and is still covered by a patent. It works by affixing to the viral RNA polymerase, which is a viral growth factor.

The medicine has never been used to treat people, according to the researchers, and it targets a special location on viral RNA polymerase.

To make a pill that can be taken, the research team is aiming to alter the chemistry of the antiviral component. The team wants to utilize more complex animal models to investigate the safety and effectiveness of the reformulated drug.
